Bu makale, şehir kimliğinin oluşumunda sanatçıların oynadığı rolü, Vincent Van Gogh’un Arles’taki sanatsal faaliyetleri üzerinden incelemektedir. Van Gogh, 1888-1889 yılları arasında Arles’ta geçirdiği sürede, şehirle derin bir etkileşim içine girerek bu küçük kasabanın kimliğini dönüştürmüş ve dünya sanat tarihinde önemli bir yere oturtmuştur. Van Gogh’un Arles döneminde ürettiği eserler, yalnızca sanatçının iç dünyasını değil, aynı zamanda Arles’ın doğal ve kültürel çevresini de güçlü bir şekilde yansıtmaktadır. Çalışma, Van Gogh’un Arles’taki yaşamı ve bu dönemde ürettiği eserler ile şehrin kimliği arasındaki karşılıklı etkileşimi analiz etmektedir. Sanatçının mekânsal algısı ve şehre dair sanatsal temsilleri, Arles’ın küresel bir sanat merkezi olarak algılanmasına katkıda bulunmuştur. Van Gogh’un Arles’taki varlığı, şehrin kültürel kimliğinin şekillenmesinde ve dünya genelinde tanınmasında kilit bir rol oynamıştır. Bu bağlamda, makale, sanatın ve sanatçının bir şehrin kimliği üzerindeki dönüştürücü etkisini vurgulamaktadır. Makale, şehir ve sanat ilişkisini, kültürel kimlik ve mekân teorileri çerçevesinde ele almaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, Van Gogh’un sanatsal üretiminin Arles’ın kentsel kimliğine olan etkisi detaylı bir şekilde incelenmektedir. Van Gogh'un Arles şehri hakkında birden fazla eser ürettiği tespit edilmiştir. Kaynaklarda sanatçının bu şehre büyük önem verdiği belirtilmektedir. Sanatçı, şehre verdiği önemi eserlerinde ana konu yaparak göstermiştir. Sanatın bir şehir üzerindeki etkisi, o şehri sıradan bir yer olmaktan çıkarıp evrensel bir anlatı ve estetik simgeye dönüştürme becerisinde yatar. Şehir, salt coğrafi veya tarihsel bir yer olmaktan çıkar, kültürel kimliğini güçlendirir ve sanatın evrensel diliyle harmanlanarak zamansız bir eser haline gelir. Sanatçılar şehirleri duygusal ve sosyolojik bir bağlamda ele alarak gündelik yaşamı estetik bir deneyime dönüştürür ve şehirlerin kültürel hafızasını şekillendirirler. Van Gogh'un bu bağlamdaki eserleriyle Arles şehrine sanatsal bir kimlik kazandırdığı ve şehri çağının ve sınırlarının çok ötesine taşıdığı sonucuna varılmıştır.
