Artist Effect on the Formation of City Identity: The Example of Arles and Van Gogh

This article examines the role of artists in the formation of city identity through Vincent Van Gogh’s artistic activities in Arles. During the time he spent in Arles between 1888 and 1889, Van Gogh deeply interacted with the city, transforming the identity of this small town and placing it in an important place in world art history. The works produced by him during his Arles period strongly reflect not only the artist’s inner world but also the natural and cultural environment of Arles. The study analyzes the interaction between artists life in Arles, the works he produced during this period and the identity of the city. The artist’s spatial perception and artistic representations of the city contributed to the perception of Arles as a global art center. Van Gogh’s presence in Arles played a key role in shaping the city’s cultural identity and its recognition worldwide. The article emphasizes the transformative effect of art and the artist on the identity of a city and examines the relationship between city and art within the framework of cultural identity and space theories. In this context, the impact of Van Gogh's artistic production on the urban identity of Arles is examined in detail. It is stated in the sources that the artist attached great importance to this city. Artists transform everyday life into an aesthetic experience by addressing cities in an emotional and sociological context and shape the cultural memory of the cities. It has been concluded that Van Gogh gave the city an artistic identity with his works in this context and carried the city far beyond its era and borders.
